Women and Girls have played significant roles in the creation, development and advancement of hockey in the Cairns region and in 2018, over 90 years from when Miss E O’Hare and Misses Jones coaches the first ever game of hockey in the cairns Region played by girls from Cairns High and Atherton High in Cairns, women and girls continue to play leading roles

  • Women and Girls hold Leadership roles across Cairns Hockey Board and Volunteer Committees
  • Women and Girls hold positions of influence in all Club Committees
  • Advancing Aspire to be Deadly, a hockey program that supports opportunities for indigenous young women and girls through mentor and leadership support programs
  •  Women hold senor staffing positions within Cairns Hockey

For over a century, women’s day has been being celebrated around the world to rejoice the achievements and plight of women but it still appears as if the world still needs several years to entirely bridge this gap that has existed from time immemorial.

The first international Women’s day was celebrated back in the 1908 when a group of 15,000 women marched on the streets of New York, demanding their rights. Since then every year on 8th March the world joins hands together to support, raise, inspire and motivate women across all fields of work. The purpose of this day is to focus on various themes such as innovation, the portrayal of women in the media, or the importance of education and career opportunities.

Cairns Hockey takes this opportunity to recognize women who make an outstanding contribution to hockey across the region.

We asked for our members to nominate people they feel make this contribution and we are delighted to recognize and celebrate the following outstanding women across Cairns Hockey in 2018. These women were nominated by other outstanding women. We also take this opportunity to recognize and celebrate the women who are life members of our association, these women have forged a pathway upon which all others have followed. A special mention to our Operations Manager JULIE MCNEIL who was nominated for Cairns Regional Council Women of the Year.
