National Hockey Week enables Cairns Hockey to continue to highlight the internationally recognized BDO ASPIRE TO BE DEADLY Hockey Program recently awarded the Queensland Reconciliation Awards – Community Program and selected as a finalist in the very prestigious Beyond Sport International Awards for best Partnership and Collaboration. Cairns Hockey has created history this week through the BDO Aspire to be Deadly Program supporting 4 Torres Strait Island young hockey players competing in the State Schools 12 and Under Hockey Championships in Brisbane as part of the President’s Team. The Peninsula Teams – boys and girls are also well represented by Cairns Hockey players.
The aim of the week is to celebrate all aspects of the sport from the players, to volunteers, umpires, coaches and families who give up their time to support their loved ones who are involved in hockey. It is the time to celebrate all that is good about being involved in hockey. Cairns Hockey is proud of its history with families being involved in the sport for decades. 2017 provides Cairns Hockey the opportunity of respecting its past 90 years and the history and traditions forged through adversity and necessity while at the same time celebrating all that is great about the emerging youth who are the future.
Since 1927 Cairns Hockey has been at the front of providing its members access to the very best in events, facilities and resources. Today we are very proud to have advanced a senior and secondary competition with 68 teams competing and a primary competition with 56 teams. School Programs are using the facility on a regular basis and with training and representative programs, Cairns Hockey and its 4 clubs work together to deliver a great family sport full of opportunity, fun and advancement.
In addition, Summer Hockey is a social competition from October to December and now Indoor Hockey is an option to play between September and December each year. Coaching and Umpiring opportunities are also supported through Cairns Hockey with pathways that can take you all the way around the world to the Olympics.
All of these achievements are built on the platform of passion provided by our volunteer supporters. Everyone who gives us a hand through school, club or association programs, whether it’s helping a team, helping to fundraise, assisting in officiating, coaching, working bees, managing or being on a club or association committee, you help make us what we are – together we are hockey – and together we should celebrate National Hockey Week and look forward to great times with family and friends playing the game we all love.
