Thanks to the Cairns Hockey Coaching, Development and Mentoring Programs in 2017

Cairns Hockey in December 2015 included in its strategic planning, the objective to improve our pathways and ultimately provide the ability for an increased number of our athletes to be involved in state and national programs. To support this, Cairns Hockey included in its strategic planning

Cairns Hockey Strategic Objective 5 – Delivering Successful Pathways

Critical Success Factor –  Maximizing Cairns Regional Hockey Academy Outcomes

Key Performance Indicator

  • Implementation of “cairns way” culture,
  • strengthening local and regional competition,
  • increased quality of local coaches and officials,
  • access to higher quality competition, role models,
  • increased access to information & technology

The Cairns Hockey Coaching and Development Department led by David McNeil and supported by Matt Cook and Wes Ferns set out to create a medium to long term program designed to focus on our junior programs and build local and regional capacity from this level up. The Cairns Regional Hockey Academy was reviewed and redesigned to support this strategy and focus.

Cairns Hockey continues to review and assess our pathway programs and in September 2017, it is appropriate to acknowledge that in Under Age Programs, Cairns Hockey has the highest number of athletes being selected in state and national programs than ever before. This takes dedication and a commitment across the local, regional, representative programs focusing on coach and athlete mentoring and upskilling. The additional time it takes to achieve this is over and above their contracted employment responsibilities and in reality David McNeil and Matt Cook in particular have worked a minimum of 50 plus hours a week to oversee and deliver this program success. Without this commitment to Cairns Hockey and its members, opportunities and outcomes like this just don’t happen.

Hockey Queensland invited the following Cairns Hockey athletes to the 2017 Under 16 Talent Development Camp in Mackay. In addition as part of professional and pathways development Wes Ferns is attending as the assistant 2018 Under 15 Coach and Paula Valmadre has been invited and accepted to attend.  Congratulations to all.
